A long and scenic journey back to Middle Earth more innocent and less threatening than LOTR enjoyable but not as epic.
Ian Holm recounts his early days to Frodo (Elijah Wood) including the taking of Erebor by Smaug. Everything flashbacks to his first meeting with Gandalf, Bilbo now played by Martin Freeman.
The first part of the trilogy begins with the journey to Erebor where the party of wizard, dwarves and hobbit go to Rivendell and the Misty Mountains.
Many details the book just mentions, the film expands - Dol Guldur and the Necromancer, the White Council where Saruman poo-pooing Gandalf's suspicion about the dragon Smaug and the Necromancer. Radagast the Brown another wizard whose only mentioned in the books is seen with a sled pulled by large rabbits. We do get to see Bilbo's trolls and how they turn to stone.
Sauron as the Necromancer has no form and isn't a threat when Bilbo puts on the ring there's no Eye and the twilight where he enters is fainter than what Frodo encounters in LOTR.
Of the many battles in the film, the origin of Thorin's nickname, "Oakenshield" at the Battle of Azanulbizar, where they show Thorin's father attempt to reclaim Moria from the orcs is fantastic!
Peter Jackson expands "The Hobbit" with more details than the book, the film is a visual joy to watch. For Tolkien fans it's good to be back in Middle Earth!
We get two more films for "The Hobbit"
When will we get to see "The Silmarillion" in the future?

A reluctant hobbit, Bilbo Baggins, sets out to the Lonely Mountain with a spirited group of dwarves to reclaim their mountain home - and the gold within it - from the dragon Smaug.
The Hobbit's three titles- An Unexpected Journey, The Desolation of Smaug, and There and Back Again. Extending the story from the original plan of two films to a trilogy means we will see more, hopefully even the "Battle of the Five Armies" where Bilbo sat through knocked out unconscious.
The Hobbit is a tale of Bilbo Baggins and his adventure to the Iron Mountains with a company of dwarves and a familiar Grey Wizard.
While at Oxford in the 1930's Tolkien began writing on a blank piece of paper, "In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit." soon by 1932 he lent out a finished manuscript to friends which got into the hands of Stanley Unwin who had his son review it. Rayner Unwin loved it and Stanley Unwin decided to publish "The Hobbit".
First edition sold out with popular reviews subsequent printings led to Stanley Unwin asking Tolkien for a sequel. Tolkien showed drafts for "The Silmarillion" but Stanley wanted more Hobbits! Tolkien began writing a new story that will become "The Lord of the Rings".
Directed by Peter Jackson who also wrought the Lord of the Rings film trilogy.
The dwarves, along with Bilbo Baggins and Gandalf the Grey, continue their quest to reclaim Erebor, their homeland, from Smaug. Bilbo Baggins is in possession of a mysterious and magical ring.
From Academy Award®-winning filmmaker Peter Jackson comes “The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies,” the third in a trilogy of films adapting the enduringly popular masterpiece The Hobbit, by J.R.R. Tolkien
“The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies” brings to an epic conclusion the adventures of Bilbo Baggins, Thorin Oakenshield and the Company of Dwarves. Having reclaimed their homeland from the Dragon Smaug, the Company has unwittingly unleashed a deadly force into the world. Enraged, Smaug rains his fiery wrath down upon the defenseless men, women and children of Lake-town.
Obsessed above all else with his reclaimed treasure, Thorin sacrifices friendship and honor to hoard it as Bilbo’s frantic attempts to make him see reason drive the Hobbit towards a desperate and dangerous choice. But there are even greater dangers ahead. Unseen by any but the Wizard Gandalf, the great enemy Sauron has sent forth legions of Orcs in a stealth attack upon the Lonely Mountain.
As darkness converges on their escalating conflict, the races of Dwarves, Elves and Men must decide – unite or be destroyed. Bilbo finds himself fighting for his life and the lives of his friends in the epic Battle of the Five Armies, as the future of Middle-earth hangs in the balance.
